At the Heart of the Presbyterian Way is the Belief that People of God are Called to be Leaders
This commitment manifests itself in a style of “representative democracy” that is unique in the worldwide church.
Elders (the translation of the Greek word presbyteros) form a group called Session, which is the governing body of the church.
Fair Oaks Church’s Session has 12 members. Their responsibilities include:
- Receiving new members
- Leading the congregation in mission
- Providing for worship and the administration of the sacraments – Baptism and Communion
- Offering educational programs and fellowship opportunities
- Challenging the congregation in its stewardship of time, talent and financial resources.
Deacons (comprising a Board of 12) are often called “the heart of the church.” Alongside our pastors, they are the comforters and caretakers for the rest of our congregation. The deacons do such things as:
- Plan meals for those in times of stress and heartache
- Make special efforts to welcome anyone new to FOPC
- Send care packages to students away at college
- Organize coffee and treats for after services
- Regularly check on other members to help us stay connected
- Join our pastors for home visitations and communion
Nominating Committee works to discern who is feeling called to serve and seeks to fill each available seat of elders and deacons. Occasionally, this group also works to fill special committees such as a pastoral nominating committee. The Nominating Committee is comprised of session and deacon representatives along with members at-large.
